Plinius 9200 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER
To own a separate control and power amplifier is the dream of many music enthusiasts. Imagine having that level of performance in a single box. The design team responsible for the PLINIUS Odeon have forged and moulded a chassis system of function and beauty from the very best materials and this heritage guarantees performance and long term reliability.

The PLINIUS 8150 set the standard for higher powered Integrated Amplifiers some years ago and each iteration of that model has kept PLINIUS at the forefront of this very important amplifier genre.

The PLINIUS design team have kept the 9200 features in the now familiar curved chassis and have included Balanced Inputs for CD to satisfy the demands of audiophiles.

Several aspects of previous PLINIUS Integrated Amplifiers have been continued in the 9200 including low noise, low distortion J FET input circuitry and the very best of discrete componentry.

The 9200 will allow the connection of up to 4 source components plus Phono and has both Balanced and Single Ended connection for digital inputs while a Processor Loop allows full integration with a home theatre system.

The Phono section has been highly praised and allows connection of both Moving Coil and Moving Magnet cartridges. An easily accessible gain change will give optimum results for both types of cartridges.

The large toroidal transformer will drive the 9200 to power levels in excess of 200 watts per channel into 8 Ohms. The power supply has been given priority with an extremely low impedance stiff design being implemented. Difficult speaker loads are driven with ease to the most satisfying levels of volume while maintaining control and finesse.

Plinius DC-101 cd player
In July 2001 our Director of Design, Ross Stevens, presented us with a piece of bent aluminium. This, he said, is how PLINIUS will look in the future.

At the time we had no real idea where this journey would take us but as time moved on and new amplifiers evolved we realised that we had created something very special.

The new PLINIUS look has been very well received by the Audio Public but the distinctive curves have created a gap. Very quickly we found that a source component was needed to match. We didn't really want to develop a CD Player as there are many very competent designs available but we were unable to withstand the constant pressure from our customers.

In true PLINIUS tradition we have approached the development of our CD Player from a different angle. We have always felt that the potential of Redbook CD has held promise but has been short on delivery. In our research we have listened long and hard to SACD and other formats but we have elected to stick with Redbook because of the results achieved and to support the extensive CD collections our customers already have.

Our DAC development has been time consuming. An initial false start using some of the latest technology (asynchronous upsampling, and bitstream conversion) lead to a disappointing sonic result. We then re-thought and developed a DAC following a very conservative path. Noting the DIY enthusiast's endorsement of simple solutions, and with our general philosophy of avoiding unnecessary complexity, we evaluated a DAC design that used simple synchronous oversampling, and a multibit DAC. This needed no additional analogue filtering, and was in keeping with our like of simplicity. The outcome was more than we expected. This design, coupled with a low jitter master clock feeding the transport, has delivered Redbook CD performance that surpasses that which we have previously heard.

Physically the PLINIUS CD101 matches our range of Integrated, Pre and Power Amplifiers. The operational styling of the CD101 has only one control button on the front panel with all other functions driven from the distinctive remote control. The remote control also has some basic functions allowing volume and mute adjustment on PLINIUS Pre and Integrated Amplifiers. We put much effort into understanding the interface requirements, and decided that as music is the goal, the interface should distract as little as possible. Considering the user interaction with vinyl replay, where there are no digital track-time-elapsed displays, and the focus is on just listening to music, we decided to make the user interaction with the CD101 similar. The display consists of a series of micro LEDs showing the progress of the tracks through the disc. This is simple, elegant, and directs the listener's focus to the music and away from the technology.

The mechanical design has also seen much effort go into ensuring the transport is isolated, and the chassis is well damped. We have developed a substantial tray support and bearing system, and applied damping material and compliance where necessary. The build quality is beyond reproach.

As with other PLINIUS products it is the music that matters most. The CD101 is a worthy addition to our range.

Plinius Koru Phono Preamplifier
KORU PHONO PREAMPLIFIER
It is now ten years since the PLINIUS Jarrah was introduced. It is hard to believe that this venerable Phono Preamplifier has held its position as one of the top phono preamplifiers available virtually without change for that period of time.

The interest in vinyl reproduction is showing no hesitation and with such a strong demand for phono based systems it is time for the PLINIUS Team to introduce a dedicated phono preamplifier in line with our current thinking.

This is the first product developed by PLINIUS with market input from our new European distribution team.

Obviously any new PLINIUS product has to be compatible with our new look and the new KORU Phono Preamplifier is presented in the Ross Stevens inspired curved chassis, with a slight twist. The chassis is actually two in one allowing physical separation of the power supply from the amplification circuitry.

The power supply has received very detailed attention and boasts a virtual battery approach with over 100,000 micro Farads of capacitance and very sophisticated 2 stage regulation. This ensures the lowest impedance and consequently extreme accuracy of power delivery to the amplification stages.

The amplification and equilisation circuitry is specific to the new Phono Preamplifier and uses the latest components ensuring accuracy and longevity. Low output moving coil cartridges as well as higher output moving magnet types can be used and there is a full range of user adjustments available on the rear panel.

Both Single Ended and Balanced Output signals are catered for and with passive high frequency and active low frequency equilisation the PLINIUS KORU Phono Preamplifier will maintain stability and finesse under the most demanding conditions.

Musically it is more revealing and will move you closer to the event than before. Details and images seem to float and the depth and ambient retrieval is a revelation.

Available in both Black and Silver, the PLINIUS KORU Phono Preamplifier is set to become a classic and will be a very worthy successor to the mighty Jarrah.

Plinius SA-REFERENCE POWER AMPLIFIER
In 1992, PLINIUS released the SA250 Class A Amplifier. This amplifier was to become our reference standard, and one to which we compared all of our other products.

With the development of the PLINIUS Odeon, SB300 and SA201 it became apparent that the SA250 had been eclipsed as our reference product. We therefore set about correcting the imbalance. While we continue to champion our asymmetric approach to circuit design we have refined the operation of our output stage with by far the largest imrovement being in the high frequency performance. Along with other refinements we have managed to improve on the SA250, and exceed the new standard set by our other products. We are proud to announce that a new PLINIUS Reference has been created.

The PLINIUS Reference Amplifier has been designed specifically to work as either a balanced monoblock, or a stereo amplifier. As a balanced monoblock the SA Reference will exceed 1kW of pure balanced amplification.

In PLINIUS tradition, premium components have been used throughout and Class A operation is maintained to over 100 Watts per Channel while 300 Watts is available in stereo mode to direct and control the most demanding speaker systems.

The PLINIUS SA Reference amplifier embodies all that we have learned in the past few years and while modelled on the Classic SA look it has been given some aesthetic changes to bring it into line with our present styling.

Sonically the SA Reference paints a seamless picture from the most tuneful and accurate bass to a sweet, extended and extremely believable top end.

All PLINIUS SA Reference Amplifiers are hand built and as each is individually engraved on the front panel, we are able to offer some customer selection of the serial number. Some numbers between 1 and 100 are still available. We will endeavour to have your specific choice engraved if that number is still available.

Plinius SA-103 POWER AMPLIFIER
1989 saw the introduction of the PLINIUS SA100 developed as a stereo amplifier from early work done by Gary Morrison and the small PLINIUS design team. The SA100 broke new ground in that a powerful Pure Class A amplifier was available within an economic package. Many hundreds were sold under different guises culminating in the SA102 in 2003.

Time passes, development continues and with the introduction of the SA Reference amplifier a new standard has been achieved for PLINIUS. The SA102 while very well received by the audio community was beginning to show its age.

The PLINIUS SA103 has been developed on the heels of the newer PLINIUS amplifiers and it shares the sonic and aesthetic gains that have elevated these designs to new levels.

The classic PLINIUS look has been maintained with the use of the distinctive heatsink profile that has allowed us to produce an amplifier capable of operating in Pure Class A up to 125 watts per channel without the use of troublesome fans or other methods used for cooling.

Balanced circuits used in the SA103 allow full Balanced Mono operation in excess of 400 watts. The addition of another SA103 will provide an amplification system capable of the highest level of excellence without totally breaking the bank.

As with all PLINIUS amplifiers, premium components have been used throughout. There is the addition of a 12 Volt trigger which will allow integration into a semi automated system.

Sonically the SA103 embodies all that we have learned and will paint a very believable and transparent facsimile of a live musical event.

A small group of dedicated technicians build each SA103 by hand in our New Zealand factory ensuring that our stringent standards are maintained.

Plinius SA-301 POWER AMPLIFIER
The PLINIUS SB-301 is our answer to the perennial power versus sonic quality debate.

We were approached about 12 months ago by a Californian company engaged in the manufacture of large home theatre speaker systems, and asked to submit an amplifier for their appraisal.

There were two important specifications that had to be adhered to, a)the amplifier had to sound good, and b)the amplifier had to sound good at 120dB!

We sent them an SA102 and goal one was achieved. The sound quality was better than anything experienced previously, however under rigorous testing they found that the SA102 would only deliver 115dB prior to clipping.

We then sent an SA250/4. Goal a and b were surpassed but the SA250/4 is very large and a little too expensive for the multi-amplifier applications they had in mind.

Back to square one and some head scratching. Our design team decided that we needed a 300 watt,SA102 package and this is exactly what the SB301 is. The basic circuit topology is the same as the SA102 but with a larger power supply and more rugged output stage. The number of output devices is double that of the SA102 and the two toroidal transformers are larger.

The SB301 operates in Class AB bias and as such the standing temperature is lower than that encountered in our SA series designs.

The construction of the SB301 is to the same extreme of quality as the rest of the PLINIUS line and offers the rugged dependability of the SA series designs.

It is widely believed that as amplifier power increases the sonic ability diminishes. Clearly the SB301 dispels this notion and will deliver all the dynamics, finesse and transparency that PLINIUS is renowned for.

The SB301 is at home in the most demanding music or theatre applications and will perform flawlessly under the most arduous conditions.

Plinius ODEON POWER AMPLIFIER
The PLINIUS Odeon is the culmination of more than two years actual development time and twenty-two years of PLINIUS heritage.

When we first stepped onto the Multichannel development path we found that although there were already many fine home theatre amplifiers available none had really addressed the requirements of music lovers. Right from the outset the PLINIUS Odeon had to satisfy a real world musical presentation. For us this meant that if one replaced an SA-102 or an SA-250 in a two-channel system with our Odeon amplifier there would be no chance of feeling short changed.

The design team headed by Gary Morrison set about emulating the performance of our SA-102 in a form that could be built into a multichannel chassis without compromise. While the circuit work was developing our Director of Design Ross Stevens was creating havoc with our engineers in building the chassis he wanted to house the circuitry.

By January 2002 we had a working prototype and our early comparisons with the best available Home Theatre amplifiers proved that we had something very special indeed. Production was delayed while specialist bending equipment was designed and fabricated, resulting in a custom machine able to reliably reproduce the complex two piece aluminium chassis surround.

Internally the Odeon is striking in both its complexity and engineering excellence. The power supply is huge and uses 4 transformers connected in parallel to provide the drive necessary for up to six channels delivering 200 Watts each continuously. The main circuit board has the control circuitry plus the initial power supply filtering. The full benefit of the power supply can be heard when the Odeon is used in a two channel system, giving one a sense of immense reserve regardless of the speaker demands.

There is further power supply filtering on each amplification module. All single channel modules are fitted with input and output terminals offering both Single Ended and Balanced input connections.

Of course nothing stands still and during the gestation period of the Odeon further requirements of Multichannel amplifiers became apparent. In order to future proof the Odeon we have designed a Dual Channel Amplifier Module which can be fitted at the time of purchase or easily added later as the system evolves. The Dual Channel Module has a power rating of 2 x 100Watts and allows expansion right up to twelve channels if necessary. Therefore any combination of 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 etc is available and can be field fitted.

The PLINIUS Odeon can also be used in a two channel system as a stand alone tri-amplifier delivering power and finesse to the most demanding speaker systems.

This is a highly developed amplifier and will form the nucleus of the best multichannel or two channel audio systems.

Plinius SA-201 POWER AMPLIFIER
Often we hear of technology developed for a premium model being transferred to other products within a line. While this does have some validity usually there are compromises made to allow this "technology" to appear in sibling models.

Following on the tremendous success of the Odeon we thought that it would be prudent to capture the sonic magic of the Odeon and make it more readily available in a two channel package. We have been aware for some time that we can now get frighteningly close to Class A operation with a Class AB design.

The Odeon proved this and not happy to just rely on Odeon technology we have created a two channel amplifier, the PLINIUS SA-201, that uses two exact Odeon modules in a smaller chassis. The power supply is similar to the Odeon and uses two very large toroidal transformers connected in parallel. The same attention to detail is maintained and internally the SA-201 is both elegant and functional.

The PLINIUS SA-201 will deliver 225 Watts per Channel and in keeping with all Plinius amplifiers is not distressed by difficult to drive speaker systems.

We have elected to keep the SA name for this model as it represents a premium quality amplifier that shares a close sonic and value pedigree with our top range amplifiers.

The distinctive styling of the PLINIUS SA-201 will allow its inclusion in both traditional and contemporary settings while providing the level of performance that is a PLINIUS hallmark.

The PLINIUS SA-201 is available in both Silver and Black anodised finish.

Plinius P10 POWER AMPLIFIER
Although our entry-level amplifier, the P10 has a level of sophistication rarely found in such a cost-effective product. The PLINIUS Odeon development has had a dramatic effect on the design and implementation of this very desirable amplifier. The Odeon power supply has been mirrored in a smaller more cost effective way and the new circuit uses faster driver devices with separate input and driver stage power supply regulation. This has delivered an amplifier capable of true high-end performance.

The large toroidal transformer will allow the P10 to deliver power levels in excess of 200 watts per channel into 8 Ohms. Difficult speaker loads are driven with ease to the most satisfying levels, while maintaining control and finesse.

The ideal partner for the P10 is the PLINIUS M8 Preamplifier. The stable mates will combine to perform at the highest level. The P10 is also highly suited to multiple custom installation use.

The chassis has been fashioned from robust materials including a forged and anodised fascia of gratifying solidity. The fascia and accents are available in either silver or black to match with other ancillary equipment.

Testimonials
Testimonial from Shen of Plessis Model A Alex good morning.. I really have to commend you on your amplifier. It is now at 223 hours and it truly sounds fantastic. I managed to do an AB comparison with the kav 400. Not only did it resolve much more detail, it was much more musical in the process. Surprisingly, your amp did not want for bass in comparison - your bass was less controlled than the solid stateamp as expected, but it was not dramatically so. Also surprising was the power of transients where your amp was almost the equal of the much higher rated krell. Your amp was so much better than the krell that it made a mockery of the fawning review that stereophile gave the krell [class a no less]. Thanks for giving me an amp that has given me so much musical enjoyment. Shen
