How it started......
In the 1960's Designer Brad Serhan's great uncle Bill Mawer was head technician of a company that imported Quad valve amplifiers and Quad electrostatics. This association was the catalyst for Brad's interest in music and hi fi.
Whilst studying electrical engineering at university in the late 1970's, hi fi tweaking with fellow residential college students provided Brad with a passion for loudspeaker design.
In 1980 this passion culminated in Brad's first loudspeaker project, a 3 way bass reflex design. These loudspeakers were sold to the Senior Student of the residential college and further sales to fellow students ensued.
In 1984 Brad Serhan founded 'Orpheus Loudspeakers'. The company's first model was the Dolomite. It proved to be the first of several designs which were pivotal in the evolution of Orpheus.

Dolomite, Minotaur, Metaphor, CS18
Dolomite
Designed in 1984 as a 'no compromise' stand mount 8" two way loudspeaker. The Dolomite utilised Norwegian Seas drivers, Solen polypropylene capacitors and tar pads (to reduce cabinet colouration). The Dolomite was critical to Orpheus challenging the 'imported is better' principle and was quickly adopted by hi fi specialist dealers around Australia. This also applied to professional audio, where the Dolomite was selected by Channel 10 as pre and post broadcast monitors (5.1 Dolby Surround Sound). Channel 10 is still using the Dolomite's in its Sydney facilities.
Minotaur
Designed in1988 as a compact audiophile stand mounted 2 way loudspeaker with 5 inch bass driver. The Minotaur was pivotal for Orpheus in breaking into the professional audio market including ABC Radio and TV, Channel 10, EMI Studios 301 and others. The Minotaur is still in production and currently in use at the same professional facilities. (See Greg Borrowman's Australian Hi Fi review).
Metaphor
First produced in 1991 as a budget audiophile bookshelf loudspeaker. The Metaphor received critical acclaim, including two Sound & Image awards. It also had commercial success in Australia and was exported to Singapore & Malaysia. The Metaphor evolved into the very successful Aurora 1 in 2000.

Orpheus Tiberius $5500.00 a pair
Orpheus Tiberius
The Orpheus Advantage
20 years of Design experience + "The Emotion Quotient
The Tiberius is a no compromise compact 2 way loudspeaker for either domestic or professional audio applications. Its 7" bass / mid driver's magnet system has been configured to eliminate modulation and dynamic distortion. As a result the bass is incredibly clean and powerful with an authority in its extension that belies its size.
It also features a heavily damped carbon fibre impregnated paper cone that drastically reduces cone break-up through the critical midrange frequencies. This lowers the noise floor and results in a transparent and highly seductive midrange. The high frequencies are handled by the refined Scanspeak 25mm textile dome tweeter which has extremely low distortion and smooth response. This translates into a wonderful sense of air, transparency and warmth that draws the listener into the acoustic space of the recording. As with all Orpheus designs, the Tiberius are characterised by their ease of listening, musicality and high 'emotion quotient'.
Technical Features:
Highest quality Scanspeak 7" Carbon Fibre / Paper bass/mid drivers and Scanspeak 25mm textile dome tweeter with a critically damped chamber.
Crossover is optimised for uniform frequency, accurate phase transition and minimum distortion.
Crossover utilises the highest quality air cored inductors, Hovland (polypropylene film & conductive foil) audiophile capacitors, Caddick metal film non inductive resistors and connected via Bocchino Audio (pure copper) binding posts.
Curved Cabinet Edges to reduce cabinet standing wave interference which results in pinpoint stereo imaging and smoother frequency response.
Cabinets (25mm MDF) are strategically braced then lined with acoustic grade foam and wool to reduce both cabinet resonance and internal standing waves. This translates into lower cabinet colouration, greater tonal accuracy and allows the cabinets to literally 'disappear' in the acoustic sense.

"I have only one concern about the Aurora 3's, and it's that these speakers sound too musical for their own good. There's no exaggerated bass response to suck in inexperienced listeners and no high-frequency peak in the tweeter response to make the treble seem airy. So in the heated environment of the of the demo room, when A-B against the often wildly inaccurate speakers that are pitched at same price-point, it will take an educated ear to hear that it is Orpheus Aurora 3's that offer the listening experience closest to the truth."
(Greg Borrowman talking about Orpheus Aurora 3 in Sound & Image Magazine, May/June 2004.)

"a beautifully balanced loudspeaker. The sound is so integrated that you're not conscious of anything except the music. An outstanding design."
[Greg Borrowman talking about the Orpheus Aurora 2 in Australian Hi Fi Magazine, Dec/Jan 1999/2000.]
"Orpheus's new Aurora 1 is an exciting speaker not just because of its great sound, but because in showing what's possible to achieve at this price level, it will serve as a benchmark to 'keep the bastards honest."

Cabinets are constructed to the highest standards- high structural integrity, low cabinet resonance.
All cabinets are crafted in selected 'real' timber veneer (jarrah, cherry, black oak).
How do they Sound?
The compact Aurora's are characterized by a truly wide, 3-dimensional sound stage with pinpoint imaging that captures the ambience of the recording space. The speakers exhibit a highly accurate midrange and treble response. This is combined with an extended bass end, with weight, punch and timing that is surprising in enclosures of this size and price.
The Emotion Quotient
The most vital ingredient of the Orpheus design recipe is technically difficult to quantify, it is that intangible quality that seems to draw you into the music. We call it the "The Emotion Quotient". This is the loudspeaker designer's ability to engage the listener to the musical event. So you don't just hear the sound, you respond to it emotionally. This is profoundly enjoyable. The Orpheus design philosophy is about how music can make us all feel. The proof is in the listening!

Cabinets are constructed to the highest standards- high structural integrity, low cabinet resonance.
All cabinets are crafted in selected 'real timber' veneers (jarrah, cherry, black oak).
Technically Advanced Design
Acoustically Aligned Drive Units. The theoretical ideal speaker is a point source. Orpheus has emulated a point source by placing the drive units in intimate proximity and electrically removing mid-range information from the lower bass driver, vastly improving driver integration and musical cohesion.
2 Way Crossover. This can be understood as a conventional two driver, 2-way design with an additional drive unit used for bass augmentation.
The lower bass drive fulfils this role of bass augmentation (which compensates accurately for cabinet diffraction loss) without detrimental effect on midrange sound staging, imaging and focus. The top bass driver has intimate positioning with the tweeter, thereby approximating the ideal point source of sound, making the individual drive units almost meld into one driver, greatly enhancing imaging, integration and a 'palpable sense of being there'.
Differential Bass Loading (DBL) The DBL technique uses two reflex-loaded bass chambers of dissimilar volumes, critically tuned to reduce impedance deviation through the bass region. This means an easier power load for the amplifier resulting in greater headroom, improved transient response and extended dynamics. DBL loudspeakers exhibit greater bass extension and better group delay (transient response / speed) than a traditional reflex (ported) design of the same size. The scale, weight and punch of bass reproduction, achieved at no detriment to speed, accuracy and timing, is nothing short of astounding, belying the modest proportions of the enclosures.
Asymmetric Tweeter Positioning. Strategically positioning the tweeter asymmetrically on the baffle greatly reduces the effect the baffle has on the output response. This leads to a much smoother high frequency response. As a result the treble is sweeter; the sound stage is open, wide and airy. The focus and imaging of the loudspeakers feels completely natural and relaxed.
How do they Sound?
The floor standing Aurora's are characterized by a truly wide, 3-dimensional sound stage with pinpoint imaging that captures the ambience of the recording space. The speakers exhibit a highly accurate midrange and treble response. This is combined with a truly extended bass end, with weight, punch and timing that is surprising in enclosures of this size and price.

Inverloch, Victoria "Orpheus Loudspeakers Installation"
A seaside resort town which takes its name from the Gaelic for lake entrance, Inverloch sits at the mouth of Anderson Inlet 145km south-east of Melbourne. The inlet protects Australian's southernmost stand of mangroves and the good surf and long stretches of heavily-duned beaches make Inverloch a popular summer holiday spot. The waters off Inverloch are becoming increasingly popular for summer boating, fishing, waterskiing and, thanks to the Bass Strait breezes, for sailing and sail-boarding The scenic drive from Inverloch to Cape Paterson, which passes through the Bunurong Cliff Coastal Reserve, presents superb views to rival those of the Great Ocean Road and the waters off the cape are a magnet for spear fishermen. The entire coastline is renowned for its rich fishing grounds and bird-watchers tend to flock on Townsends Bluff and Mahers Landing where both resident and migratory birds browse and roost. The Environment Centre's Shell Museum at Inverloch hosts a very impressive collection of shells from the area

Orpheus Aurora 3 Jarah in Balwyn Melbourne Australia
Balwyn is a residential suburb 10 km. east of Melbourne. To its south are Canterbury and Surrey Hills and northwards are Balwyn North and Greythorn, which extend to the Koonung Koonung Creek.
Balwyn was part of Henry Elgar's Special Survey of 8 square miles (1841), which was subdivided into small farms and grazing runs. One of the subdivisions was bought by a Scots editor and journalist, Andrew Murray (1813-80), in the late 1850s. He built a house which he named Balwyn, approximately on the site of the present Fintona Girls' School in Balwyn Road. Murray planted a vineyard, and reputedly derived "Balwyn" from the Gaelic "bal" and the Saxon "wyn". Other vineyards prospered until the 1890s, and grape vine branches formed part of Camberwell city's crest. Balwyn was in the north of Camberwell city. Olinda Mt Dandenong Victoria Australia
The name Dandenong is thought to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning high or lofty. The city of Dandenong, 12 km. south-west of Mount Dandenong is connected to the ranges by the tributaries of the Dandenong Creek. In 1837 the creek was recorded as "Dangynon", which by 1840 was given its present spelling. The Surveyor-General's office applied the name to the ranges in 1857, in place of he more difficult Corhanwarrabul, Aboriginal for the peak adjacent to Mount Dandenong on which Burke's Lookout is now placed.
The settlement of Mount Dandenong occurred along with Olinda in 1893 when a village settlement comprising ten-acre farms was established for selection. Prior to then the area was the province of timber-getters and a few larger selections. By 1900 the Mount Dandenong area had a post office, store and a school. It became predominantly a fruit-growing district, with increasing tourist and day-tripper traffic.

Orpheus Aurora 3 in Heatmont Melbourne Australia
Heathmont is a residential suburb 24 km. east of Melbourne and 2 km. south of Ringwood.
The name appears to have come from the rising land in the locality originally having heath or low shrub like vegetation on it.
A shop was opened in 1923 in the front room of a house, and the Heathmont Railway League began agitation for the opening of a railway station. This occurred in 1926 and a post office was opened in 1929. Heathmont then had arterial transport on both a railway line and on Canterbury Road which crossed near the railway station. Although any significant residential growth did not occur until the postwar years, when it came it was fairly rapid. From two shops and about 600 people in 1953 there were 28 shops and nearly 3,000 people by 1958.
The primary school opened in 1952 and another at Heathmont East in 1962. Heathmont College has a VCE Campus on the former Ringwood Technical School and a second campus on its original site close to Heathmont's southern boundary along the Dandenong Creek.
There is a shopping centre in Canterbury Road at the railway station , but more extensive facilities are to be found at Ringwood/Eastland, at The Mall on Mountain View Highway or further south at Knox City Shopping Centre.

Cambridge Audio 640R
The Azur 640A is back with a raft of upgrades. It now thumps out a whopping 75 watts thanks to a higher specification toroidal transformer. Moreover, a chunkier heat sink allows the amplifier to dissipate more energy and run cooler than before, meaning the amplifier can operate harder, for longer.
The Azur 640A V2's sensitive preamp circuitry has also been significantly redesigned, generating lower noise and THD (total harmonic distortion), while delivering greater levels of transparency. At the heart of these enhancements is a completely new input PCB with buffering on every input which has radically reduced crosstalk and provides even better imaging characteristics.
The Azur 640A also sees improvements to the power amplifier circuitry layout, with many small but significant refinements further reducing distortion and improving the drive capability with real world speakers.

Testimonial from client Mulgrave Melbourne Australia: Shannon
Hi Alex
I've very pleased the new Velodyne SPL-1200R subwoofer that I bought from
you recently. Compared to the 6 year old VAF Research LFE-03 that it
replaced in my system, it goes so much deeper, and gives a fuller, tighter
and cleaner bass, blending beautifully with my Orpheus speakers. It
probably isn't fair to compare it with the LFE-03, since the LFE-03 was a
"budget" subwoofer (and very good for the price), whereas the SPL-1200R was
far from cheap. However, given its level of performance, I consider the
SPL-1200R to be a bargain, and well worth the money.

customer I am!!!! :)
Thanks.
